Sometimes it's loud here, but more often it's quiet.

same with us.

quote:

Now growing up, my family was chaotic. We would have made an interesting reality show. That's just my mom's personality--she's like a little hurricane. Growing up was very interesting.

same with my mom....and my house is chaotic when she is around (she was here a few weeks ago for a week visit during her hurricane evacuation....we are still not recovered from that week!!)

quote:

I mean, don't these kids ever fight over toys? Don't they have a day where they say, "I don't want to eat that tator tot casserole??" Can they really be that perfect?

I can't say for others, only for my own family of 7....but my kids don;t usually fight over toys because I tend to put the toys in time out until they can be shared....my kids know that and don't choose to fight about it often. Food we don't make issues of....we fix what we fix (and do fix stuff we all like) but we don't allow food (or not eating certain things) to become an issue in our house. You eat what you are given or you get a pbj sandwich or you joyfully excuse yourself from the meal.

it seems like you want to see conflict because that's real life....when actually it isn't real life for everyone.

quote:

I just think the show gives an unbalanced portrayal of ordinary children in general, especially when you're dealing with so many.

I have five kids...and while it is nothing compared to 17, it is quite a large family for todays standards. I personally do not think it gives an unbalanced portrayal of ordinary life...at least not my life.....mine is very much like theirs, just on a much smaller scale.

quote:

but to be perfectly frank, I have raised my voice to my children, I have even yelled.

maybe she figured out years ago that it doesn't do much good to yell...I have personally found that when I get quiet my kids listen better...and when I get really mad I go silent and start speaking in sign language.

quote:

they are quite loyal "followers" of Bill Gothard....and, among "Gothardites", it's a fairly common belief (as the "teaching" regarding having "many children" and, more specifically, refraining from ANY use of ANY type of contraception EVER), is repeated over and over throughout the program's materials.....

where have you seen written that they are "loyal followers"....and has been pointed out before, there are followers that don't really believe everything Gothard.

and yes...let's keep the general area of Gothard out of it.....and let's remember that if you want to quote facts such as what a family believes, then let's please back it up with facts specifically related to them saying what they believe....links, people....I like links!!!!!!! So if someone says on a web site that they believe one way then post the link. I love to read back-up stuff

A persons decision to have a large family is their own and I do not really care as long as they do not try to dump their kids off at my house to take care of them. I did once have a neighbor with 5 kids who was always trying to find someone who would take her kids for free so she could go out. I also do not care if they are on TV. I do not watch any of it since I am really not interested in watching parents take care of their kids, I get plenty of front row seats with my own family. I did watch the first and I think second duggar special but after that I lost interest.

I thought we were warned at the beginning of this thread not to turn it into a Gothard thing.

sorry...i must've overlooked that one.....

but, I thought it was relevant, since they are the "poster children/family", in the "world of Gothard" right now (not opinion).....and, are LIKELY to be heavily influenced by his teachings....and, thus, is VERY LIKELY the reason WHY they do what they do....

but, enough of that....

Ok, I'm a little confused...you want to leave Gothard out of it...

...but you're questioning the legitimacy of claims that the Duggars are into Gothard...

...which pretty much throws a challenge out to those of us who have written about that in the current discussions...

...now we (those of us who have made these claims) either 1) show why we believe this is the case (as you say, web sites, articles, other citations) - thereby generating more discussion about Gothard (which you apparently don't want to see)...

or...2) ignore your challenge about the legitimacy of these claims, which pretty much calls into question our accuracy, and even potential honesty, as posters.

I think anything more I write about this topic will be in a thread specific to the Duggars, or specific to Gothard.

well, I am the OP..and I am willing to slightly go there...SLIGHTLY...IF you can back up your claim that they are the "poster family" for Gothard. until then I really am not willing to let this thread go there. So can you prove that? Where is their "poster" that you can say for sure links Gothard and the Duggars?

strike that...let's start a gothard thread

I haven't seen any of these shows. We don't have cable. But I do know the mother of one of the most recent shows. She and I have been on the same large family board for several years so I only know her in a vague internet kind of way.

Christi and her husband did the show because they consider having children to be a vibrant and fun lifestyle and they didn't mind sharing that with others on a one-time basis. Their older kids actually asked to write in to the show to see if they could be on it.

I think their segment came out last Spring? Honestly I don't keep up with it since we don't get the channel.

We had a family staying here for a week the year before last. they had 10 kids (they have another one on the way now). They were all quiet and well behaved and rather quiet inside and a little louder outside. They always shared and played gently with the toys. The mother never raised her voice. The kids never complained about their food that I ever heard. That was just the way they were. It was really neat.

The funny thing is that the mom looked up to ME! I almost fell over. It was mostly because of how we handled having extended family living with us with children. They were getting ready to do a similar thing themselves.

I know a very small family that is exactly the same way, and I expect as their family grows they will continue that way. It is just their style, and it's the way they were raised too. They train *very* early on for obedience, but the parents are extremely soft-spoken and gentle, even though they are quite strict.

Me, I do yell and my kids do argue. But seeing the Duggars hasn't made me feel condemned or less than perfect. It gives me hope that 10 children down the road does not automatically mean utter chaos. I yell a lot less now than I did 4 years ago, and my kids fight a lot less now than they did 6 months ago. Keep things moving in that direction and who knows what wonderful things might happen in our family?

I will say, while we are considered to be a "large" family by today's standards (even with only 5 kids) ... I'm definitely NOT one who would like to be on TV for anything -- although it would definitely give me a kick to keep my house tidier than what it is right now ...

Hi, Christi, welcome to the forums. I haven't heard of you guys, actually, but maybe some of the people around here that get TLC know who you are.
