Never would I allow my child to be in a room that I did not have access to...if that is what you mean by the key code.

That being said...I do run a daycare and can ascertain that children do indeed behave better when parents are not present. I think parents who are using the nursery should not hang around while their kids are in there. We have had a nursery that was for needed basis only as in the parents came with their child did what needed to be done...be it discipline, diapering, feeding, time of energy release or etc and then returned to the sanctuary...but in a true nursery situation...children should be left by the parents in my opinion to the ones tending the nursery. I also thought that nurseries were for under three years of age...anything older was in children's church or the sanctuary.

It's like the system used at retirment homes etc...parent's who use the nursery will be given the code to enter/exit, but small children will not be able to open the door and run out.

I too believe a nursery is for children under a certain age. I know when my children were small we only used it until they were 2 and even then it was only when needed and not just because it was there.

You may want to find out if this is legal. I would be concerned about my child being able to get out in case of an emergency. Maybe it is legal (I don't know), but it sounds potentially dangerous to me.

Having an alarm to alert the care person that someone is coming or going might be a consideration.

The solution is a gate with a childproof opening mechanism. We had one in the nursery I worked in. You could also use a dutch door with a latch on the bottom half.

Our nurseries use the Dutch door and I've attended other churches that use them as well.

These are not babies, they are bigger kids who are quite frankly being allowed to behave like brats. An alarm won't work because, from the sound of it the adults in there are not paying any attention anyway. A baby gate or dutch door would be figured out by these kids in a matter of a few hours.

To the original poster, why has this pastor been allowed to stay in the pastorate? He is not in control of his own family how can he lead a church. The children are not being served, at this age they can be in fun age appropriate classes. The church as a whole is being disrupted. There has been attempts to remedy the situation and the pastor is unresponsive. So obviously he isn't leading.

We used the gate for kids birth to just before kindergarten. Frankly, a tape line on teh floor will work if the caregivers will enforce it. But more importantly, what they do needs to be SAFE, and having a locked door is NOT safe and may not even be legal.

We have child-proof door handles on all our early childhood rooms (5 on down). It's a large church and we routinely have well over 100 babies & toddlers in our nursery area each Sunday. I can't ever recall a single child "getting loose" and we don't lock the doors.

Thanks everyone. Im not familiar with a "dutch door" but will certainly look into it..and some other options mentioned.

I know the locked gates work well for small kids, but I am pretty sure a 3 and 5 yr old would climb right over them. Don't you think so?

As for the Pastor, well thats another subject for another thread I suppose, but I'll just say some of us have discussed his strengths and weaknesses and at this time we think the best thing for us is to try and work with him and help him mature in areas of weakness. I understand there are those who say someone needs to go who has such problems, but there is a big picture and it's hard to describe the whole picture here.

I do feel confident we will move forward and provide a better nursery and I also think someone from the outside will do a much better job of making new guidelines stick.

The gate I have used is solid wood and as high as most of their heads. But the truth is, nothing will work if the adults don't work it.

I agree that there is too wide of an age range in the nursery.

Are there enough kids to offer something for the older preschoolers?
