IMO there are many reasons someone doesn't respond to Christianity. -They've been indoctrinated to believe Christians are bad. -They haven't had the gospel explained very well or from a reliable source. -They are angry or depressed and take it out on God. -They are selfish people who refuse to obey God's word. Each person is different and should be approached with a different attitude. You can't minister to everyone the same way. Incidentally, when it comes to hypocritical "Christians" I also had a bad view of Christianity for a long time because of some bad people. Fortunately God interevened and brought me to some real believers, and they showed me what Christ was really all about. There are a lot of good churches out there.

So, believe as you will as to why some of us have rejected Christianity...but the truth is, some of us are turned off by the self-righteous, selfish attitudes found within that community. Notdoneyet, While I agree with scripture that the "natural man" cannot understand the things of the Lord. I must own the statement you have made. For I have no doubt been a hypocrite at times and I have sought self satisfaction rather than being the Christ like servant that you are longing to see. The ironic thing is the very traits that are pleasing to you can only be found in Christ and in those who have placed their trust in Him. But again we all can be selfish, and self righteous. Which of course is absurd for the believer who has been given true life as an adopted son of God. The reality is that God uses His church to preach the Gospel both in word and deed to show the world how sweet the follower of Christ can be. More than that we give the glory to God, knowing full well that we were at one time an enemy of God but now have been brought near to the very Son of God who has purchased our salvation by His great sacrifice. You my friend will never find that selfless person who is not self righteous outside of Christ and his followers who have been made new in Christ. I don't mean to sound pious but I do believe that true life can only be found in Christ. I hope you will find what you are looking for.

I understand your sentiment, NotDoneYet, and also other sentiments expressed on this thread. I have stayed away from church several times for various reasons and I am 'in Christ'! There definitely can be found a lot of sin in the church, as well as genuine good though too. To raise your kids to live by The Golden Rule is very good, but I think most likely you will find, NotDoneYet, (and I am prodding now),...I think you will find that you don't follow The Golden Rule and neither do or will your kids (and neither do I follow The Golden Rule - I fail miserably and often at it) - despite your great teaching. For one thing, those who practice The Golden Rule extend mercy, not judgement, to people, because that is what we all want - is mercy. The Golden Rule defers judgement to God because a person obeying that rule understands that they don't know all the facts and so have no capacity to judge and condemn other people. We can discern sin and evil, truth and error, but we can't pronounce final judgements and condemnations on people. We don't know their circumstances, motives, etc.. Perhaps, NotDoneYet, the real reason that you stay away from Christ is because you would rather be able to be the Judge rather than let Him be the Judge - both of ourselves and others. God bless, Galadriel2

If I was not already a Christian, I know that Christians themselves would be one of the main causes I don't believe. Liberalism, bad theology, no spirituality or anything goes spirituality, denominational feuds, TV Evangelists, healers that don't heal, divorce among Christians not to mention general immorality, desire to be just like the world and wear their Christianity like a cherry on top of a sundae and on and on. Yeah, I want to belong............... I believe because there is so much evil in this beautiful world that I absolutely know that if God did not exist, neither would this world. I desire God and at this point in my life, I would say that as far as Christians go, like Paul, I just want to know Christ in them. Leave your opinions behind and get truth out of God's word.

ORIGINAL: phreddy I think you will get many answers to this question, but they all come down to people would prefer to worship themselves. I wouldn't say that its simply because people would prefer to WORSHIP themselves. Its definitely not the reason in every case. I think that the word choose would be better in my answer than prefer. When people are selfish or prideful, they are putting themselves in God's place. They are saying that what they want is more important than what God wants. When we rationalize doing something that we know is wrong, we are saying that our rules are more important than God's rules. By being selfish or prideful, we are taking God's place, and Who is the only One worthy of Worship? God. If we are putting ourselves in front of God, then we are saying that we are worthy of worship.

I think many refuse to believe because they do actually see the truth in Christ but are hamstrung by their own sense of unworthiness. They do not witness until they can overcome sin in their lives and can not preach the gospel for they are all too aware of their own sins and find it would be a greater form of hypocracy to do so as they are. Our pasts prevent us from participating. A man who has committed serious sins in the past is prevented from ministry and missions not only by his own low self-esteem but by the church. Faith demands action and many are unwilling to have to humble themselves and do those things they would feel uncomfortable doing. If I believed, I could not walk past the poor, the starving and the homeless, so it is just easier not to believe. Then again faith demands love and far too many just can not find it in them to love others unconditionally. The one motivator to get men to take up faith is love. And how I goan until my love is satisfied with my faith.

Jesus spoke very plainly as to why folks reject God; (Joh 3:18) He who believes on Him is not condemned, but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only-begotten Son of God. (Joh 3:19) And this is the condemnation, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than the Light, because their deeds were evil. (Joh 3:20) For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light, lest his deeds should be exposed. Thanks RC

To Not Done Yet, I am not hard hearted, I understand the way you feel, I was there once myself. But I never got to the point of denial of God or an afterlife based on my observations of other people and their weaknesses. If you truly believe that there is no God and willing to wager your soul and maybe the souls of your children, then no words or actions of mortal man can cause you to change your mind. The fact that your here in this forum gives me sufficient hope that God is not done with "Not Done Yet". Please for your own souls sake and that of your children, do not harden your heart. Be honest with yourself and find out were these thoughts and feelings are originating from. Are they from God? are they spiritually based? Who feeds on hurt emotions, who delights in anger, who spurs you on to reject the One based on the actions of a few or many? My prayer for you and yours is this: Dear Jesus here is a soul that you shed your precious blood for, one You knew while they were still in the womb. They tried to touch the hem of your garment, but a crowd of only curious people got in their way. Lord do not turn aside, but turn around and see this person and look straight into their eyes. Compassionate Lord see the hurt, heal the hurt and touch their heart, Lord do this for the prayers that have been offered up for this soul. You promise to be where 2 or more are gathered together in your name and there are many here gathered in your name. Represented here are Your children from around the country and perhaps the world which petition you for the heart of this hurting child. We represent a church without doors or name. Your prayer that you prayed to the Father before Your hour of sacrifice is that we would be one in You. We as ONE pray for "Not done yet" whose real name is known to you. Sweet Jesus this prayer is asked in your Name...Amen. May God be with you "Not Done Yet" and may the next sentence written in your life be written in new found hope. Love in Christ, Dan94

While I appreciate all the sentiments expressed here... First...I can and will judge what I believe is right for me and for my family... Second...the MOST mercy I have ever had extended to me in my time of need was by an incredible gay couple...the most loving people I have EVER met... Third...I attempt, and strive, EVERY day...to show others grace and mercy. I don't prejudge ANYONE based on their lifestyle, religion, or anything else... Yet...that pre-judgement happens time after time w/in the Christian community. And lastly, I don't feel I need a "savior" to save me from anything...I'm not lost... NDY

People reject Christ because because they dont want Him and all the sweetness and light from from His followers will not get them to change their minds, so all of this "a christian was mean to me" nonsense is garbage. I wish those who do reject Him would just be honest and admit that they love themselves more and quit laying blame at the feet of others. I have had horrible experiences with car dealers but i don't swear off of cars because of it.

Heck, some were even married to preachers, too! Come to think of it, I have also been burned by agnostics, co-workers, athiests, mechanics, & car salesmen. Shoot, my own brother-in-law shafted me once, but not a one of them were anywhere within the realm of comparing to the sweetest, most compassionate, non-judgemental friend of all, JESUS CHRIST. What anyone else says outside of the perfect love of Jesus Christ, is just that, OUTSIDE. I sure don't hold God accountable for someone else's words or actions. It's not His fault that a man uses his freewill to destroy others. He's just there to pick up the pieces that we scatter.

It's not His fault that a man uses his freewill to destroy others. He's just there to pick up the pieces that we scatter. Norak Excellant point, so many people look at imperfect people and Notdoneyet as found more then his/her share. But if notdoneyet would look into the perfect word of God and then judge what God says, not how people act, then notdoneyet would realize (if being honest with oneself) that those people AND notdoneyet are both wrong. I used to go thru life and shoot my bible gun off at people based on my personel opinions or experiences being justified by self. Notdoneyet,... no one in here will justifiably argue that you ran into some rotten fruit Christians, who somewhere along the line got disconnected from the true Vine. When Christians get disconnected from the vine of the Lord Jesus Christ..His word is the true vine. Then what happens in the spiritual is what happens in the natural...rotten fruit. If we do not abide in the vine and someone comes to examine the fruit, who has never "really tasted to see that the Lord is good" then discouragement can grow into anger. I can never fathom anyone who has truly tasted the fruit of The Lord ever turning away from Him. They would know the fruit of error and know it could not be possibly connected to the vine of His Word. We Christians if we do not abide in the vine are left exposed to the elements of the world and will suffer the same punishment less we repent. I can not agree with your views of our faith because I have tasted Christ and know His goodness first hand. None the less I will keep praying for you. Love in Christ alone..Dan94

What do you see as the reasons for why we and other's reject God? Why do we not just simply trust Him, love Him, and obey at all times? Why don't we always want to be with Him in everything we (I relate to all people) do? I see it as because we all have the sin nature in us. Like the Pharisee and the Publican..One was proud and one was humble before God and asked for mercy. I believe when we see the truth about ourselves, we will humble ourselves. But, because I believe God is in total control, I believe He created it like that for a purpose. If He created everything, then He created the serpent that caused Adam's/our fall, that brought about our sin nature. It does make for a situation where we have to yield our self will and pride to get out of. Some do that easier than others. Too, I tend to believe that God draws specific people at a specific time for specific purposes. Jesus told the Pharisees that they shut up the kingdom for those who go would in at a certain time...so hipocracy, evidently does play a role in some rejecting God.

Thanks, NotDoneYet, for your candid responses. I was hesitant to post what I did because I don't want to push you farther away from Christ. With me personally, (and I think I am very much like everyone else), most often, the problems that I have with others' sins isn't so much about their sin and that I am so righteous. It is about my awareness of my own tendency to respond to their sin in a sinful way myself. I tend to not like to see my own sin and can isolate myself from it and deny it. I think this is how all men tend to be and we will avoid things and people that bring out our own sinfulness. It is a good thing to do if it will keep you from sinning, but we would have to move off of planet earth to stay away from all sin. The Bible does delineate very specific and limited instances when we are to withdraw from hanging out with certain Christians (1 Cor. 5:11). They are 'Christians' who practice sexual immorality, greed, idolatry, slander, alcoholism and extortion. This isn't the same thing as being a believer who stumbles in many ways (which the Bible teaches is true of all Christians). This is someone who after being confronted about these sins and offered help with them insists on persisting in them without attempting to get victory over them. These are people who we can exhort as brothers from a distance, so to speak, but I wouldn't make them your best friends. I'm glad you found a gay couple to be merciful to you in your time of need. Its too bad you didn't find any in the church to be merciful - it seems. There is a story in the Gospels about a man who comes to Jesus and asks him what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus says to him something along the lines of 'You know the commandments'. The man says to Jesus, 'All these I have kept' from my youth up. Then Jesus says to him, 'One thing you lack.' Go and give all that you have to the poor and 'come follow me'. It says that the man walked away sorrowful and that Jesus had compassion on him, (if I'm not mistaken). It seems that that is all that you lack - following Jesus. I hope that you don't hate me or feel any resentment, irritation, or malice towards me for saying so. God bless you abundantly, Galadriel2

That is a good point about the hypocrisy of the religious leaders of Jesus' day actually shutting people out from God's kingdom. It wasn't just all the sin they had in their lives - greed instead of mercy, not understanding what principles are foundational and most important and what ones aren't, etc. - but also they taught people falsely about who Jesus and the Messiah was and each person's need for Him. God bless, Galadriel2

I don't "hate" anyone... Some I choose not to hang out with, some I choose to stay away from, but "hate"...no... Another thing I've found...within the Christian community, the tendency is to shoot their own wounded...the man or woman going through a divorce...all of a sudden is isolated, shunned. The parents struggling with a rebellious child, or a child who has chosen to commit criminal acts, again, shunned...as if what is happening in their lives will somehow "contaminate" the rest of the body... I won't go into details about my own life...but because of certain happenings in my own life (no, I'm str8), it is a guarantee that I would be shunned if any of these issues came to light. I can't be a fake person and I will not lie... So...again...it is better to let those like-minded types to stay together, and not get their apple carts rocked... NDY

I totally agree with you, NDY, that there are people in the church who shoot the wounded in the church. I sometimes thought that the church is great if there is nothing wrong with you, but watch out if there is something wrong. The church is just good at kidding itself that there is nothing wrong. There is a lot wrong with everyone. I have found churches and individual believers, though, who truly love 'sinners' and don't condemn people - imperfect though they be. God bless abundantly, Galadriel2

We "EXPECT" God to do things our way, instead of "TRUSTING" that He knows best, we would rather do it our way. We are not on God's timetable, so we become impatient, therefore that will cause people to lose a lack of trust in God. Believe me, this is something that God is showing & teaching me how to do on a day to day basis with Him. I know He knows best and He controls all, but there are many times, that I want something done "NOW." So I have to slow down, and say, "Ok, I know that you know best, so Im trusting you on this."

As stated earlier the main reason people reject Christ is because they are dead according to scripture. Not according to me. The dead cannot, in and of themselves, choose life. That means folks like Not Done yet are spiritually dead. Not Done is not christian and it is all the Christians fault. They do this and they don't do that. Unlike Job, all of the problems in my life were of my own making. I am the cause of my financial and emotional problems. When i went to the Christians for help they put food in me and put me to work. Eventually, i dug myself out. I would rather work for money then to get a hand out. Imagine standing in front of the Living God on Judgment Day and saying the reason i rejected Christ is because Christians are hypocrites. Got news for ya...That doo doo won't flush. The fault, Dear Brutis, is not with the stars. Quit whining Not Done Yet. If u wanna get right with God, go to the cross of Christ. If you are your own Savior and you don't need Christ then what are you doing here? I never went to a whore house to tell people their faults. Proverbs 27:6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend, But deceitful are the kisses of an enemy.

So...maybe there were things that were my fault, but at the time when I needed help, from a community that I was an active part of, I got shunned.. Reasonable conclusion: these people are full of soup...they say one thing and do another. I don't need that hypocricy in my life...and I sure don't want my kids learning that.... Maybe I'm "spiritually dead"...but remember...not everyone who says "Lord, Lord" will enter the kingdom...go look in the mirror... NDY
