Good Gracious! I have a small dog, a 15 lb Pug, with a NASTY gas problem lately! She just let one that nearly knocked me off my feet!

Any ideas to remedy this problem? We haven't changed her food lately and she doesn't get table scraps so I don't know what the problem could be. She is on a daily aspirin for arthritis, but she's been on that for a year now.

Help!

Blessings,

Garsy

What are you feeding her?

A number of possibilities:

1) Something bacterial. My bernese mountain dog (100 lb puppy) got into some elk poo here in CO and contracted something that gave her bad gas and projectile diarhea. Think about THAT for a moment. I feel for you, but it CAN be worse ....
2) Food sensitivity - some sensitivies can be dormant early on but become apparent with age.
3) Sensitivities related to the arthritis drugs - check with your vet to see if gastrointestinal issues could be caused by what you're using
4) Possible the pup just got outside and swallowed something gross. Dog's do that. Good news is that in this case this too shall pass.

Like my vet told me, "Don't worry too much. It all comes out alright in the end."

Are you sure it's the dog and not your husband?...husbands always blame the dog!

Your library probably has a series of books on this issue. They are all about a dog named Walter.

Gas can save lives. Just remember that.

If hubby were home I'd likely blame him first! But I'm home alone all day most of the time with the dog and she loves to sit under my desk chair or is always right under my feet wherever I go! I KNOW it's the dog!

Well that squashes my first idea. You're already feeding her something without corn, which is the usual culprit.

I'm just hoping whatever it is passes quickly or this is going to be a LONG winter! I can't send her outside as much in the winter as I do in the summer and fall! She's older and with her arthritis, just doesn't do well if out in the cold to long. The food she eats was recommended by our vet as she is getting up in years and does have a slight weight problem. She's been eating this for about 6 months and has lost 5 pounds and now needs to maintain and maybe lose a couple more.

Manda - she just went out and yes things are normal and fine in the bathroom department!

The Walter books are FAVORITES of my 9 year old son!

Blessings,

Garsy

My youngest child feeds the animals in the morning. She gives her one scoop (1 cup measuring cup) in the morning. I give her another half to 3/4 cup right about supper time and she usually leaves a little bit of that in the bowl. She does drink A LOT of water! I fill up her water bowl at least 3 times a day. Of course the cat drinks from this bowl too.

Blessings,

Garsy

How big is the bowl?

3 times a day sounds a lot to me (even with the cat drinking from it too) unless it's a small bowl.
I have a Cavalier King Charles weighing 22lbs and his bowl only needs filling up once a day or once every other day (and he is on diuretics for his heart, which makes him drink a little more than usual)

It's an average size dog dish holds maybe a cup and a half to two cups of water. Pugs are notorious in the amount of water they drink, especially when the weather is so dry. She's been drinking a lot of water since the day we got her 5 years ago and before that she was my mother's dog and she said that she always drank a lot for her too. The vet never seems concerned about that. And sometimes I'm not really re-filling the entire bowl, just topping it off or getting fresh because she's gotten food in the water.

Blessings,

Garsy

I'm thinking the likely culprit is that she's gotten some table scraps from one of the kids or my hubby lately, but since no one's admitting to the crime, alas I have to deal with the stinkyiness.

Blessings,

Garsy

I do not know how to cure the problem, but then Winston eats anything that looks like it may have been food at one time, just to be sure

But it does have a name around our house: Boofy Toxin.

We have a dog with the same general outlook. "It could be food! It might not be, but why take the chance of missing out."

Results in gas so powerful it once took half a day to clear the smell out of my boys room.

ROFLMHO!! Our pug was the same way. We switched him from canned food to dry and that solved the problem, but it looks like he already has the dry stuff.

Maybe he's having trouble digesting the food he's eating?? Getting older and all. Have you talk to the vet about it? They might have another food he can eat. We fed Igor eukanuba.

I love pugs.. I will keep this in mind when I can actually get one of my own. LOL!

Don't think my grandma's pug had this problem but she's long gone now.

Must be small sturdy dogs with gas problems. The dog I know that had such bad gas--alleviated with yogurt--was a Boston terrier.

Probably not the problem, but when was the last time you had your dog checked for worms? With solid poop, that's probably not it, but wouldn't hurt to check!

I do think some breeds tend to be more gassy than others. My pyrenees is a therapy dog and we frequently work with a boxer. My goodness that dog could clear a room!!! The handler says the dog is just gassy all the time! We usually work in either nursing homes or with kids at the library. Older folks think it's funny, and sometimes I do wonder if they are blaming it on the dog when it's really them! And kids, well, most kids think aything bathroom related is funny...

Yep--gotta at least check to make sure!

Clearly our dogs are related
