Is Guy to be gone 3 weeks or 3 months? I have seen both time frames listed on this thread.

Don't know if it was slip up, or not, but Gaither certainly said '3 months', when he mentioned Guy's time off. Although it was great to see Mark - and his solos were terrific - he basically stepped back and let Kevin, Rory & Gordon do their predictable, silly banter (which, BTW, I usually do like; but it just seemed a little TOO much tonight, for some reason). I think all in all, it would've been better for Gordon to just have sung all of Guy's parts, and just brought Mark in as the added attraction. I'd say it'll be the same with Phelps & Crabb- just there to fill a warm spot for a fairly popular member who is absent, and not really so much to sing with the GVB. I could hear Guy's stack vocals on a few songs, but they wren't really very prominent. That surprised me. If that's all they normally use, they aren't very heavy! I also think I figured out that Bill's parts aren't 'on the track', as many people suggest. I thik they run his mic line through an effects unit that drops his vocal an octave. There was a distinct difference of tone when he was speaking and singing 'leads' than when he was singing bass. It was quite obvious, though, that he was really singing those bass parts 'live'. Just an observation, for what it's worth...

I agree with you Tyler. The Homecoming Tour just wasn't the same without Kevin and I'm so glad he's back!

I just about couldn't stop laughing at that one! It was so current at the time--and just so perfect! I think Kevin brings a lot to their shows.

I love it when he and Rhory start carrying on. Not the same as Mark and Bill. I have laughed myself into hysterics over them. I hope Guy gets a well deserved rest. Being on the road like they have been for as many years as he's been with them is exhausting.

You know who I would like to have seen filling in for Guy? Ivan Parker! I wonder if Bill asked him, and I wonder if his personal schedule would have allowed it!

While we're on the topic of fill-ins, there is only one singer I could imagine taking Guy's place without missing a beat—having the range and style to do just as well on the classics while being unique enough to establish his own mark: Jonathan Wilburn. I've been thinking this since long before he left Gold City.

Additionally: While a lot of lead singers have nice quality, Jonathan is about the only one who would, like Guy Penrod, go up and hit high B-flats and Cs, all the while sounding like a lead singer, night after night on song after song. I venture to say that in terms of range, there's no Guy Penrod arrangement he couldn't handle—and that's really saying something. (The only ones he'd have a hard time with are the ones where Penrod put on a country twang.)

I don't think I had ever thought about it like that before. I knew that Guy could hit the High B's and C's, but you are right...it is different than when Michael English was doing the same thing. There were times when Michael and Terry Franklin were singing together with the Vocal Band that you couldn't tell who it was when Michael would go up. As good as he sounded, he definitely lost his "lead" tone and took on a tenor's tone. There is definitely no way to mistake Guy's voice for David's, Wes' or anyone else's for that matter (and, like you said, the same can be said for Jonathan). I don't mean to repeat what you have already stated, it just struck me as very insightful.

ORIGINAL: BBfan I agree...Guy is from Texas but isn't Jonathan from Alabama??? Actually, Jon is from Carthage, TN, but has been in AL for about 11 or so years. So, having BOTH of those on his side, SURE, he can "sang some twang". Just listen to some 80's era Wilburns recordings!!

Virtually any lead voice, even if the singer can sing tenor without breaking the slightest sweat, will only sound like a lead voice up through high F, G, or maybe A-flat. Wilburn and Penrod both going to B-flat and C and sounding like a lead is indeed why I named him. And jchaz - that's funny! I have a hard time imagining him with a twang, but if you say so, it must be so!

It's going to be weird to have Jason Crabb sing with a Quartet.

Does anyone know when Guy is due back out on the road? Was this rest ordered by a doctor or something Guy decided on his own?

I read somewhere that Bill Gaither noticed that he was tired and that he had a lot on him (mothers/dads on both sides of the family) and made the suggestion. One account said three weeks, but Bill Gaither said 3 months in the concert in Columbus, GA. I believe it will be closer to 3 months than to 3 weeks.

Jonathan would often sing a few lines with an exaggerated twang when he was introducing a song or doing a product pitch. Obviously, that was for comedy, but I doubt he'd have a hard time toning it down enough to actually fit a song if need be. To get this post back on topic, you are 100% correct. Jonathan would be a perfect fill in for Guy.
