I never gave hugs much thought, I was a hugger from a small child, but only people I know well. However, I had never heard of "side hugs" or any other classification before joining this forum. Just never crossed my mind. Now, I consider how I'm hugging whom.

Thanks a lot. What used to be as natural as shaking hands is now a carefully orchestrated action... Maybe I'll start doing "air" hugs where we don't actually touch.

When I was at missions school, the staff explained that they were very careful not to hug anybody because that person might have issues with, say, past abuse. Have I ruined the rest of your day?

OK, I'm mailing you a hug too. As soon as I can figure how many stamps it takes to send one to Brazil.

BTW, I met a Baptist (Dr. Sam Maddox) who grew up in Brazil as the son of missionaries to Brazil. I heard his last sermon (I even keep it online on our church's sermon archive page) when he was well into his 90s. He was one of the deepest and most interesting men of God I've ever met. But more importantly, his whole family, down through his grandchildren, are outstanding witnesses in our community. What a joy to have known him.

Like I said, I only hug people that I know well. And when in doubt, I ask. I won't even offer an air hug to a stranger or aquaintence.

Besides, unless someone is completely oblivious, you can tell when someone is not receptive to a hug.

I have a built in hug radar and can tell who is receptive. Suprise!

So I hug only the huggables and let the others work it out amoungt themselves. My radar will work on them if they eventually come around and realize that I don't bite and my hugs are always sincere.

My dad has mellowed in his old age and will hug me...it means alot. I'm just glad he hasn't turned out like the old dude I knew at a church I attended. This old coot would kiss all the ladies/girlies at church on the lips if he could get away with it. The girls would all laugh about it! I hope I'm as slick as he is when I'm that old!

Hey Euty, you might want to check with your postmaster on this one. The side hug uses a wider envelope...it might require some extra postage for dimensional issues.

Haven't heard of Dr. Maddox. I am amazed at how many missionaries are here in Brazil.

Ok. . .here's my whine list:

People who sit in the front row and sleep all through the sermon

Our church is so small that ANYONE who volunteers can help lead worship. . .this would include a girl who thinks she's the next Rebecca St. James (and ISN'T) and a man who likes to make up his own harmonies (and doesn't know how). LOL! oh, and a kid who can't keep a rythmn on the drums.

When the communion juice tastes like soap because someone forgot to rinse the cup filler after they washed it.

Comic relief for the pastor and for anyone sitting in the immediate vicinity of them! I nearly had a giggling fit last week when I ended up sitting behind a girl who not only slept. . .occasionally her mouth dropped open. LOL!

Oh here's another whine:

For some reason our power point projector isn't quite wide enough or something because the sides of the song sheets get cut off. A few weeks ago Matt and I had to stifle our laughing when we came to a line that said. . .

"Corned by the ones he came to save" (should have been scorned but the S got cut off).

People who sleep through sermons keep choir members who sit behind the pastor awake. I remember a church dedication with like 4 pastors in a row. We counted 37 people sleeping (of 500) and at least 11 different ways to do so... not a one of us fell asleep, but not many can quote the fourth sermon either

Thanks Walker... and I am not offended by huggers!!! (notice that was a side hug- on BOTH sides!)

I have sat listening to the preaching and hear an unmistakeable snort of a snorer when he awakens himself.

Oh, dear. I came close to falling asleep at a funeral this morning.

One time I hugged a friend and then she said she didn't like hugs. I was embarrassed. Then she said that my hugs were okay, though, because there was real love behind them.

Okay. Back to whining. I am afraid of our church ushers. They shake hands with iron grips. I'm going, "Hi, how are you." (Don't you dare touch my hand!)

I know exactly what you mean! To avoid too much pain, I offer my left hand with the palm up.

As far as hugging goes. I dont like just anyone to hug me. Some people just give me the creeps. And I notice they seem to be the same ones other's avoid too.

I don't care about people sleeping on the front row (or even when I'm teaching because I know at least they got something worthwhile out of being there).

What bugs me is when people sit in MY spot or park in My regular slot. The nerve of some people. Especially visitors who don't bother asking if somebody usually sits or parks there.

Nice thing about being in the church orchestra, I never have to worry about anybody getting my seat.

I have a problem with shaking hands with a limp wristed man. What's even worse is a sticky clammy limp wrist...especially if it's the preacher.

I'm the same way. I just want to slap him silly for offering me a dead fish handshake.

Um... I mean... I am less than enthused with an insincere handshake.

Of course, it is also totally unnecessary to attempt to crush every bone in my hand.
