Well Martin,

We're still here in the trenches every week. Doing our part of the great commission. Just this last weekend, some of us from my Church went to our annual Men's Retreat in Ripley, WV. We even had the honor of two of our missionaries who are home on stateside assignment for a year worship with us. Most of us are over 40 (46-3/4) and are here and busy as ever. Don't worry Brother, this is a very busy time of year for anyone over the age of 40. Especially if you're a proud parent of a high school or college graduate. You'll be hearing more from us soon i'm sure.

haha yeah one of those things where you're rummaging through the church garage sale for the teenagers trips, and amidst the pile of men's Hawaiian shirts this woman stops , looks with this intent look, and says "you look familiar", are you soandso. After my jaw remained hanging open for a few seconds too long, she says "didn't you live in a quansit hut off Napoopoo road 36 years ago. and then we started talking both at once. Amazing the things we forget as time marches onward.

So, come on. Who will confess to hippieville 30 something years ago.

I've over 40 and still working in the church. Are you saying as a volunteer or as a career? I've done both. I feel no matter what age you are, God can use you in any capacity. I've noticed a lot of 40+ ages returning to church and that's a good sign, considering they haven't been as active. I know of several people in the 40's just getting started in the ministry. I know of some going on mission fields. It's like we all have a chance of a second wind. I knew a man nearing 70 said he had retired from the ministry but went on a mission trip and came back and said "he was needed there." He brought solar light to people in Africa who needed electricity. The Lord told him he wasn't through with him.

I remember those days and lived them. Remember this?

"Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in your Hair"

I did that on a number of occasions. Later when I was working for a large corporation I did make to San Franciso ~ but sadly by that time, wearing flowers in ones hair was frowned upon.

Does anyone know the lyrics to...something like...,
"I thought those days would never leave..." ?

)

Volunteer or career doesn't matter. Don't think God uses those divisions.

I agree it is good to see the mid-age ranges in the churches. Remember Corrie Ten Boom? She was in her 80's when she was going around the world preaching. Awesome stories of God's grace and power she told.

Well, I remember the flowers, though I didn't wear them myself. hehe Besides in Hawaii everyone still wears flowers in their hair, and around their necks. So, if you want to wear flowers in your hair , come to Hawaii for a visit.

If it had not been for my sideburns, all through high school and college my hair was short enough to pass military regs, but never a crewcut.

Whoa, boy. I still have pictures from my "Prince Valiant" days right out of high school with hair down to my shoulders that flipped up on the ends.

This past weekend I ran into a sister of this guy I had the worst crush on in our youth group! He was three years older and at that time, it just seemed like decades! I honestly can't remember ever talking with him until after we were in our 20's and I had somehow managed to get a grip on myself...LOL

It was so great to reminisce about those days when Saturday Live was "new" and toe socks were cool and the neatest thing in our church at the time was they let the youth group lead the Sunday service once a month with our guitars and such. We were called the Walther League back then (Lutheran Church Missouri Synod).

Anyway, her brother is STILL with Wycliffe somewhere in the jungle continuing to do bible translations, etc. In fact, all of her brothers and sisters are involved in ministry in some capacity. What a testimony to God!

Did I mention how cool toe socks were if you wore them with sandals?

Well, not many "local boys" would consider themselves hippies. but it was kinda like going back in time to the days when Hawaii was run by the kings and everyone kinda lived together, helped each other. We were stupid in our innocence and ignorance you know. But no one could tell us that.

shoulder length hair, eh. knew a lot of guys like that. and a lot of the locals really liked to keep it that way for years. Only the need for an income and bosses who wouldn't go for it just tied back changed that.

Yeah, I hear ya Martin. Although I think being here for a while qualifies you as a "local boy".

Being a "hippy" was associated with haoles, although not all of them were. Being a haole myself (moved over in 1960 with my folks) I picked up pidgin very quickly, as a matter of survival, if you know what I mean

. Still have some friends in Keaukaha, and in Waimea there are lots of "local" people. Seems the west side of the island has always been more progressive

My hair style changed when I joined the work force. You couldn't just tie it back working in the hotels.

Is it not strange that in a thread labeled "church workers and theologians" you are talking about being a hippy????

So, I'll admit I was in that group, but I called myself a flower child. I loved wearing long flowing skirts, fringed shirts, sandals, and headbands. I am a teacher now and once a year we have 60s day. I love to once again pull out the tye-dye and beads. It really doesn't seem that much out of place now tho!

haha well, I think it's very informative to find out where God found and called all these church workers and theologians. Even the Bible tells us a good deal about the first disciples and apostles.

Reminds us all we are just humans with a calling to serve God and fellow Christians.

And sounds like you were indeed a bona fide hippie. The headbands did it.

Let's just say it was way tacky (way way tacky!

)and we did that in the winter, not the summer...summer's for bare feet or flip flops - pasty white or not...cause once you've been barefoot about a week, the lovely color of clay mixed with dirt gives you a southern glow that no suntan can do!
