I'm a born natural.

Here's my or , etc. of the day:

A UNIVERSITY graduate student abandoned the institution in frustration after a marking fiasco during which a lecturer told him to produce "more smarter writing".

It gets worse after that.

At my Christian college, I had a prof mark a friend down for using the word "humanity," he said it was sexist.

I know apartment management offices aren't known as bastions of intellect , but we tenants got a memo last week all about "distinguishing" cigarettes properly.

They meant, of course, extinguishing, but used "distinguishing" at least 5 times throughout the whole memo.

But is IS important to distinguish cigarettes. I've heard some of the ones from Afghanistan are particularly nasty!

(gosh....I'll have to start really watching my spelling in this thread... )

English major here, too. A confession...when I quote posts, I usually correct them for spelling and grammar. I try not to, but sometimes my OGD (obsessive grammar disorder) gets the better of me.

I once got called down by a college professor for saying "that's the pot calling the kettle black." She claimed I was being racist.

Hey...anyone into some irreverant humor? Tonight (also March 1 and 8) on PBS, there's 2-hours worth of Monty Python's Personal Best on.

AND, if you are a Python fan, Monty Python's Flying Circus (the show) is coming back to PBS in April, as a regular series.

Guiness Ice Cream:

1 cup water
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
1 1/2 cups evaporated milk
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup Guinness stout

In a heavy saucepan whisk together the water and the cornstarch and simmer the mixture over moderate heat, whisking, for 2 minutes. Add the milks, the salt, and the sugar, heat the mixture over moderately low heat, whisking, for 1 to 2 minutes, or until the sugar is dissolved, and remove the pan from the heat. Let the mixture cool completely, stir in the Guinness, and freeze the mixture in an ice-cream freezer according to the manufacturer's instructions. Makes about 1 quart

***DISCLAIMER: The person who first made this for me hated it, as did the half dozen or so other people who tried it. I was the only one who liked it. So if you make it and think it's gross, consider yourself warned.***

RE: Monty Python

It's cheesy, but my favorite Monty Python moment was when they were doing Wuthering Heights in semaphore. It makes me laugh just thinking about it!

I was going to post this earlier when you all were discussing books, but I got too busy at work.

One of my all time favorite lines from a book was in "Stiffs" by Mary Roach. It's about autopsies and such. Anybody read it?....Anyone? Thought not.

Don't know if anyone will appreciate it, but here goes:

"I'm a believer in organ and tissue (bone, cartilage, skin) donation, but was unsettled to learn that donated skin that isn't used for, say, grafting onto burn victims may be processed and used cosmetically to plump up wrinkles and aggrandize (don't know if I can say it, but she mentions a male body part). While I have no preconceived notions of the hereafter, I stand firm in my conviction that it should not take the form of someone's underpants."

Any particular reason, or just free- floating angst?

English wasn't the major, but thoroughly enjoyed the better part of the curriculum.

The Flying Circus... one of very few reasons why I miss a TV. Most of those shows usually reduced me to tears and a sore stomach. Comedy sure ain't what it used to be.

No beer/ale/mead here, thanks... rye/coke be fine. My own mix of coffee, Kahlua and 2% suits even better.

you mean if I donate my skin, it could be used in Mary Kay or some guy's enlargement surgery?? My skin could be having sex without me in it??? and with a woman, and I am not even gay??? that is just soooo wrong!

Hi.....popping out of lurk mode for a sec.....(hiya, Greg!)

When my dh passed on from a heart attack, we weren't able to donate most of his organs, because of how he died, but we were able to donate corneas, bone, and skin. I found out later that two people can now see because of him. Didn't know what all they could do with skin, though I was told that some of it was used for skin grafting for burn patients. Anything else, NO WAY.

Enjoying this thread, even with the "bible-thumping fundy church" crack.....

This reminds me of the story of a man in England who was hung for the murder of his girlfriend. After the execution the authorities did an autopsy to find out why he killed her. They did not come to any conclusion but they did use his skin as book covers. The books are in the town museum.

I found this story becuase I was googling for fun one day and I put in this story from an old English folk song that I have on LP and it was an actual story.

Irreverant humour? Not I.

Oh, that reminds me of a joke I heard today...

Oh...I checked PBS tonight...didn't see it. Maybe it came on at 8. Or is coming on at 10 - but is it a new something? Or that old one...and by coming back, you mean they're airing the reruns, no?

Ha! As long as you put "A Christian Bar?" in there.

quote:

My angst is a given (my squatter name was ~ Angst), but I'm not one to share my personal life on message boards. I've always wondered, if the couples I've seen be all over the board with "I'm getting married!" will be so sharing when things aren't going so well...

I haven't read Stiffs, but I want to. Somebody buy it for me..."I have always depended upon the kindess of strangers."

(I owe the library money and can't check stuff out)

Anything involved death and funerals/the funeral business (I write obituaries). Like Six Feet Under. Season 5 comes out next month!

They used the dead guys skin to make covers for his girlfriend's autopsy?

Darcy, I'm so sorry to hear about your husband, but that's so awesome, how his passing helped other people!

It just so happened one day that Karl Barth, Paul Tillich, and Reinhold Niebuhr find themselves all at the same time at Caesarea Philippi. And who should come along but Jesus, and he asks these three famous theologians, "Who do you say that I am?"

Karl Barth stands up and says: "You are the 'wholly other,' the vestigious trinitatum who speaks to us in the modality of Christomonism."

Following this, Paul Tillich states: "You are he who heals our ambiguities and overcomes the split of angst and existential estrangement; you are he who speaks of the theonomous viewpoint of the analogia entis, the analogy of our being and the ground of all possibilities."

Reinhold Niebuhr gives a cough for effect and says, in one breath: "You are the impossible possibility who brings to us, your children of light and children of darkness, the overwhelming oughtness in the midst of our fraught condition of estrangement and brokenness in the contiguity and
existential anxieties of our ontological relationships."

And Jesus looks at them and says, "What?"
