Hi, had a question, I have opened a eatery and catering business in a fitness club. The newnest has worn out and I need to bring more people in. The eatery is opened to the public and in the catering I specialize in selling my desserts to local restaurants, business luncheons, rehearsal dinners, Parties etc. I have three menus to utilize, full dessert menu(tortes, tarts, Cheescakes, bars, cookies etc.) a full catering menu(subs to coconut crusted trout w spicy mango sauce) and the eatery menu( BOxed lunch style, Chicken salad sandwiches to fresh Salads, quiche) I enjoy my business very much but I need more contacts and more marketing, I am a new business so money is limited...DOes anyone have any marketing ideas for me or anyone in Spartanburg area that would have some contacts to pass my way? Thankyou!!!!

One of the hardest things for a business owner to do is to MAKE time for networking. You need to look into civic clubs, Better Business Bureau and their networking opportunities, and maybe advertise in specific professional association newsletters. When it comes to catering, personal referral is the key. So give all of your family and friends some cards and ask them to please hand them out. Offer a weekly free office lunch, for up to 10 people, via a small local radio station. Get to know tux and dress or gown rental companies, photographers, and print shops, in your area.... think referrals. Also get to know the manager of the grocery stores where you buy your goods for your business. You give them business, they could pass a referral every now and then.

Well, I'm glad I could reaffirm you. Also... having owned and run our family business for going on 10 years, I'd say to not listen to negative people. While networking is important and retailers need to stand up together to fight bad laws and regulations, do not listen to negative people telling you how you can't do something. It's a fact that most small business ventures fail within the first few years. While in the death roll, they'll tell you every way how you can't do business in this town... then in turn ask YOU how you do it?? Run from negative people... have nothing to say or do with them. There is nothing wrong with working with other professionals you've come to know and trust, but the most important part of my Rolodex is my list of people with whom I WILL NOT do business.
