As the Fall season here in the USA is just a few weeks away, some use this time to get their life reoriented to this and that. I need helpful reflection on the following. My wife and I have 2 teens who are involved in school activities, and I will need to adjust my work schedule somewhat to accommodate. That means working to some degree or other, 7 days a week, and for a few months have endeavored to remember the Sabbath day and keep it set apart. For folks in a similar situation, or not, how would you suggest one could go about maintaining the desire to keep this commandment going despite the "crunch" on family time. I feel much like the man in the story who made excuses why he couldn't follow Jesus, you give into self resignation sort of. Thanks for your thoughts on this in advance.

Sadly, in this 24/7 modern world we have created it is sometimes impossible NOT to work on Sunday; or to have a reasonable work/life balance.
I've known people who have worked for an Organisation for years; and the rules changed requiring them to work on Sundays. What are they to do? Resign - and lose any pension and employment rights?
It's good that you are aware of the problem. As best you can work what your employer requires; but make up for it with your wife and family by spending additional quality time etc ... with them. Don't whatever you do neglect them in favour of work. I've seen what this can do to a marriage.
As for working on Sundays - I'm certain that God understands!

Are you a practicing Jew?
If you are a Christian, have you not read all the things that Christ did on the sabbath?
or read;
(Col 2:16) Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:
Be a Gokly father to your family, and attend Church when you can.

RC thanks, respect your opinion and yours to MVIC and James, and whoever I accidentally left out...
Spiritually we in my opinion are all practicing Jews as our Savior humanly was born from the line of David to Jewish parents. Someone wisely said, the first 3 or 4 commandments, depending on whose order you go by, deal with Man's relationship with God, not his salvation mind you, and the rest with humanity. I take Bear one another's burdens, take up your cross and follow me, come unto me all you who labor and are heavy laden... trust in the Lord with all your heart... just as seriously as the 10 in Exodus. Or, try to. My understanding of the verse RC cited in Colossians- is directing each believer to live based on the dictates of one's conscience; By your post, something else seems implied.
As I attend my kids' events this fall, the price to pay isreorganize my schedule- to working on Sunday as I am an independent contractor.
So it feels like, God is getting the shaft and the family and work are winning out. Son's football game is on Friday, band festivals on Saturday much of the day.
I guess short of home schooling, do we roll with the tide that community and schoolboards set, and say, Oh, God will understand?
Where do we stop the trend, or do we? I know Christianity Today and The Christian Century publications have some articles that raise concernswith this issue.
My observation is most who profess to be believers, go with what the civic folk impose. If an Biblical pattern is God calls, divides, and separates out from the culture: Abraham Gen 12,
-Noah Gen 6, Joshua in Numbers, the disciples in the Gospels, etc, then how do those of you who are in similar situations strike a balance where "the rubber hits the real issues of life." with a mind-set established in Scripture?

I will entirely say that last one was even funnier, rcjames.
When I get a job, if I have to work on Sunday, it's going to happen, but whenever I have the chance to outline when I'm available, my Sundays aren't free.

When the Israelites were on their way to the promised land they were NOT told to all gather together to worship the Lord, but instead to stay in their tents with their family & worship the Lord.
